Shockwave Therapy in Stockport — when other treatments haven’t worked

Shockwave Therapy
If you’ve been dealing with tendon pain for months — plantar fasciitis that won’t go away, Achilles pain that flares every morning, tennis elbow that’s resisted massage and rest — shockwave therapy may be the treatment you haven’t tried yet. Maybe you’re struggling on the golf course. Forehand getting you down or not getting on court at all? Or maybe you are not enjoying the gym or are having difficulty at work? Whatever the struggle, we can help.
Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) is a clinically proven, non-invasive treatment that uses high-energy acoustic waves to stimulate the body’s own healing response in stubborn soft tissue conditions. It’s used across elite sport and the NHS where budgets allow, and has a strong evidence base for chronic tendinopathy. We combine this modality with a comprehensive rehabilitation and recovery plan to get you back where you want to be.

Shockwave Therapy FAQ's
How does it work?
A handheld device delivers controlled acoustic pulses through the skin directly to the affected tissue. This creates a controlled micro-trauma response that restimulates the body’s natural healing process — increasing blood flow, breaking down calcific deposits, stimulating collagen production, and reducing local pain signals.
Shockwave works by addressing the underlying tissue problem, not just masking the symptoms. Most patients feel a reduction in pain within 3–6 sessions.
What does a course of treatment involve?
- Initial physiotherapy assessment to confirm shockwave is appropriate for your condition
- Gel applied to the treatment area; handheld device moves across it delivering acoustic pulses
- Sessions typically 15–30 minutes
- Standard course: 3–6 sessions, usually weekly or fortnightly
- Mild soreness is possible for 24–48 hours and some redness of the skin can occur after treatment but will settle very quickly.
Is it painful?
Is shockwave therapy right for me?
Shockwave is most suitable if:
- You have had tendon or soft tissue pain for more than 6–12 weeks
- Conservative treatment (rest, massage, stretching) has not resolved the problem
- You want to avoid steroid injections or surgery
- You have been diagnosed with plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, or a similar chronic tendon condition
Shockwave is not suitable if you are pregnant, have a bleeding disorder, active infection, or certain other medical conditions. We will always screen for suitability at assessment.
